'The school started coming apart': Trapped students had nowhere to hide
Tue May 21, 2013
I am praying for the people of Oklahoma, Texas and other states that live with the threat of monster tornadoes. (I'm also going to make sure I tell family members that "the SW corner" is no place to take shelter, which is part of what we were always told.
Soldier sentenced to life without parole for killing 5 at combat stress clinic in Iraq
Fri May 17, 2013
Somebody ought to try Michael Jones the psychiatrist who goaded a mentally ill and deeply distressed man. Jones's little crack about denying him a "golden ticket out of the Army" sounds more like a threat to force him back into yet another combat tour.
Deadly giant snail found in Houston
Tue May 7, 2013
If the things are likely carrying parasites and disease-causing bacteria or viruses, what about the woman who found one in her garden, picked it up, placed it on the palm of her hand, and THEN snapped a picture? Why did she let it loose back in her garden so it could go on its merry way, and did sh …
Opening the mystery of 250 WWII letters found in old hat box
Mon May 6, 2013
I love old records and letters! That said, anyone who tries to research these two brothers' military service may run into a problem. I really hope these men or family members are available. (My own father, a 95 year-old WWII vet, is still alive and has an excellent memory, so it IS possible the br …
May snowstorm rumbles on over Plains, Upper Midwest
Fri May 3, 2013
Well, it has happened before. I remember reading about settlers crossing the Plains, timing their trek on the best advice, for example, then getting caught in late spring snowstorms in May -- or even June I think in one location.
Pharmacist accused of planting poisoned orange juice at Starbucks
Wed May 1, 2013
Considering that she works as a pharmacist, maybe someone should check the pharmacy. No telling what kind of little surprises she could have prepared. Switching labels, tampering of all kinds, substituting one prescription for another or even ignoring drug interactions she would normally catch.
NYPD chief: Bombing suspects may have been headed for NYC to party
Wed Apr 24, 2013
I think it's supposed to be 72 virgins, not 40 or 42, but I've forgotten what the circumstances are supposed to be for "virgin awards". I don't like extremism in any form. Hate messages just create more hate, and I've noticed that the public forum in the USA has gotten pretty ugly.
Flood-hit Midwest braces for more rain, snow flurries
Wed Apr 24, 2013
Umm, I hate to nitpick, but "water topped the dyke"? Was that supposed to be funny, or does the staff writer have a spellcheck that allows for essentially rude slang? And while we're at it, if you write about record-level river crests, shouldn't you mention when and exactly how high levels like t …
Romance novelist 'Jessica Blair' is an 89-year-old man
Fri Feb 8, 2013
I don't usually read romance novels (too much sex in many cases) but I may check out these. An author who has lived a full life usually brings more depth to the characters. I also like the fact that he has female family members give his material the once-over.
Monopoly reveals newest game token (and the one kicked out of the box)
Wed Feb 6, 2013
The easiest way to remember when you use "its" vs. "it's" is a phrase I made up: "The possessive doesn't." Shared that one years ago with an office mate who always got confused, and once she figured out what it meant, it stuck with her, which of course is why I wrote it that way.
